Footloose presents Samantha Chanse

Shotwell Studios
San Francisco, CA

Back to the Graveyard, a solo comedy written and performed by Samantha Chanse will be presented by Footloose at Shotwell Studios, June 19 and 20, as part of the AIM: Artists in Motion residency series. Samantha plays herself in real time doing standup comedy plus three other characters in a story about a derailed family dinner.  Footloose Artistic Director, Mary Alice Fry, chose Chanse for the Women on the Way Festival in January, 2009, and was so impressed invited her back for a send off to her native New York.  Chanse will pursue an MFA in playwriting at Columbia University in NYC this fall.

After close to a decade of honing her theater & comedy skills, Samantha will be saying goodbye to San Francisco (at least for now).  June 19 and 20 will be the last chance to see Sam perform before she leaves.  She will be joined by others from a salon series she co-founded called Laundry Party. The shows will feature music and performance and on Saturday night there will be a post show, bon voyage party.

Samantha Chanse is a writer/performer (primarily of plays and standup comedy) and a curator, editor and arts administrator (recently as Kearny Street Workshop's artistic director and now as a board member). A native New Yorker, she has been living in San Francisco since 2001, and presents her work locally and nationally. She received an individual artist commission from the San Francisco Arts Commission for her first, full-length solo play, Lydia's Funeral Video, which premiered in February 2008 in San Francisco under the direction of Wilma Bonet and in August 2008 at the NY International Fringe Festival. She will perform it for a single night at the Marsh Theater's Marsh Rising series this June.

Back to the Graveyard was first seen in September, 2008 at Intersection for the Arts as part of Kearny Street Workshop's APAture festival, a multidisciplinary Asian American arts festival.  She also did a run at Thick Description after this year's Women on the Way Festival.  As a standup, Sam plays venues from dimly lit bars to the Herbst Theater, The Laugh Factory (NY and LA) and the Purple Onion. "Spiked with surreal celebrity trash-culture references, sardonic moral relativity, and Chanse's biting wit, LFV celebrates irreverent political incorrectness and the societal gray areas in all of us."  Connie Hwong, Flavorpill
